Collections-based Education for Sustainable Development

TOWCHED - Transforming Our World: Collections at the Heart of life-long learning and Education is an EU-funded project aimed at activating arts and heritage collections in European museums to educate children and youth for sustainable development (https://towched.eu).

The United Nations Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established in 2015, invite all sectors and all people to collaborate to secure a future that addresses our shared challenges: to end poverty and hunger; protect the planet from degradation; ensure prosperous and fulfilling lives for everyone; foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies; and work in partnership. Achieving these goals fundamentally depends both on formal education of children and youth on all levels, and on non-formal and informal lifelong learning. SDG 4.7 Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship aims to "ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.”

Within the TOWCHED framework, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is not simply schooling, but rather a lifelong process of social learning between and with people and communities and in sociocultural contexts. ESD empowers people with the knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and behaviors (including critical thinking, problem-solving and collaborative learning) to live in a way that is good for the environment, economy, and society. It encourages people to make smart, responsible choices that help create a better future for everyone.

This survey aims to gather information on how museum collections across Europe are currently utilized in education, learning, and participatory activities that contribute to sustainable development topics. The survey also collects information on experiences in implementation, collaboration and evaluation of these activities.

The survey is anonymous, and the results will be processed as a total of responses.
